I took my lucky break and I broke it in two
Put on my worried shoes
My worried shoes
And my shoes took me so many miles and they never wore out
My worried shoes
My worried shoes

My worried shoes
I made a mistake and I never forgot
I tied knots in the laces of
My worried shoes
And with every step that I’d take I’d remember my mistake
As I marched further and further away
In my worried shoes

My worried shoes
And my shoes took me down a crooked path
Away from all welcome mats
My worried shoes
And then one day I looked around and I found the sun shining down
And I took off my worried shoes
And the feet broke free
I didn’t need to wear
Then I knew the difference between worrying and caring
‘Cause I’ve got a lot of walking to do
And I don’t want to wear
My worried shoes

My friend, Dennis, clued me in to this band over the weekend. I guess they’re from California, and they sound like older Southern Easy-Rock (see also, Midlake – The Trials of Van Occupanther). I’ve wanted to find a reason not to like them, because they definitely aren’t new music. They have a fair amount of cheesy and predictable lyrics, but the music is just so catchy and it feels right listening to them. Chalk this stamp of approval up to some weird affinity towards twangy guitars and straight up lyrics.

Dawes / When You Call My Name

And then I found out today that my friends, The Brothers Nee, are friends with these fellows and happened to direct this music video for them. Of course, all this makes me just a couple of degrees away from cool.

Sentimental Education
by Tony Hoagland

And when we were eight, or nine,
our father took us back into the Alabama woods,
found a rotten log, and with his hunting knife

pried off a slab of bark
to show the hundred kinds of bugs and grubs
that we would have to eat in a time of war.

“The ones who will survive,” he told us,
looking at us hard,
“are the ones who are willing to do anything.”
Then he popped one of those pale slugs
into his mouth and started chewing.

And that was Lesson Number 4
in The Green Beret Book of Childrearing.

I looked at my pale, scrawny, knock-kneed, bug-eyed brother,
who was identical to me,
and saw that, in a world that ate the weak,
we didn’t have a prayer,

and next thing I remember, I’m working for a living
at a boring job
that I’m afraid of losing,

with a wife whose lack of love for me
is like a lack of oxygen,
and this dead thing in my chest
that used to be my heart.

Oh, if he were alive, I would tell him, “Dad,
you were right! I ate a lot of stuff
far worse than bugs.”

And I was eaten, I was eaten,
I was picked up
and chewed
and swallowed

down into the belly of the world.

Earlier this year, the internet smiled on me and directed me to the typographer/illustrator/genius, Jessica Hische. She is the exact mix of classical-retro-modern-less-is-more design that I wish I could have invented.

As any decent designer would do, I decided to blatantly copy/rip off her style. Imitation is the highest form of flattery, right? I was noticing the word “yeah” could be easily and simply made into an ambigram and thought the thin stroke style would make for a quick, good side project to distract myself from signage design. I am fascinated by ambigrams, but lack the skills to turn words or phrases into such. So, I’ll consider this a tiny victory.

My sincere thanks for inspiration and apologies for infringement to Ms. Hische.
